چکیده

Experimental observations of the evaporation characteristics of water-in-fuel emulsion droplets in film boiling on a hot horizontal surface are reported. Detailed measurements of the temporal variation of equivalent droplet diameter for water-in-heptane and water-in-decane emulsions are made at surface temperatures of 565,620 and 680 K. Experiments are performed at atmospheric pressure and initial water volume concentrations of 10, 20, 35 and 50%. More qualitative characteristics are observed for emulsions of water in octane, nonane and dodecane. It is found that water/heptane and water/decane emulsions exhibit preferential vaporization such that either the water or hydrocarbon evaporate first (for decane or heptane emulsions, respectively). This result is revealed by an apparent discontinuity in the evolution of equivalent droplet diameter and is explained on the basis of a simple distillation limit model for evaporation. Results also show that the droplet evaporation rate decreases, and the total droplet evaporation time increases, with increasing water content. The initially opaque colored droplets appear to clear up during vaporization for several of the emulsions tested. Coalescence of the internal phase for water/octane and water/dodecane emulsions is also observed. Of the emulsions tested, only the water/heptane emulsions exhibit a disruptive characteristic at the end of the evaporation process.

Hydrodynamics of Leidenfrost droplets in one-component fluids.

Using the dynamic van der Waals theory [Phys. Rev. E 75, 036304 (2007)], we numerically investigate the hydrodynamics of Leidenfrost droplets under gravity in two dimensions. Some recent theoretical predictions and experimental observations are confirmed in our simulations. A Leidenfrost droplet larger than a critical size is shown to be unstable and break up into smaller droplets due to the Ra...

Evaporation and Ignition Characteristics of Water Emulsified Diesel under Conventional and Low Temperature Combustion Conditions

The combination of emulsified diesel and low temperature combustion (LTC) technology has great potential in reducing engine emissions. A visualization study on the spray and combustion characteristics of water emulsified diesel was conducted experimentally in a constant volume chamber under conventional and LTC conditions. The effects of ambient temperature on the evaporation, ignition and comb...

Liquid droplets on hot surfaces

In this seminar behaviour of liquid droplets on a very hot surface is presented and a simple model is introduced to describe droplet evaporation. Special cases where droplet dynamics is involved are mentioned, important processes and their qualitative description is presented. This seminar supplements a previous seminar Leidenfrost effect, presented in December 2011.

Evaporation Characteristics of Diesel and Biodiesel Fuel Droplets on Hot Surfaces

In CI engines, the evaporation rate of fuel on various hot surfaces, including the combustion chamber, has a significant effect on deposit formation and accumulation, the exhaust emissions of PM and NOx, and their efficiency. Therefore, the evaporation of liquid fuel droplets impinging on hot surfaces has become an important subject of interest to engine designers, manufacturers, and researcher...

Take off of small Leidenfrost droplets.

We put in evidence the unexpected behavior of Leidenfrost droplets at the later stage of their evaporation. We predict and observe that, below a critical size Rl, the droplets spontaneously take off due to the breakdown of the lubrication regime. We establish the theoretical relation between the droplet radius and its elevation. We predict that the vapor layer thickness increases when the dropl...
